Slamming Success

I'm not sure if I am a big enough tennis fan to blog about India's performance at the Australian Open... but I sure am proud enough to do that.

The year has started off on a good note for Indian tennis - what with Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupati and Yuki Bhambri sizzling on court and emerging winners.

For Bhupati this may be another feather on his Grand Slam cap. I'm sure this is just the beginning of feathers for Sania and Yuki.

Congratulations guys, you've made us proud!!!

I was reminded of my stint as an avid tennis follower (you thought I was going to write player?? :P) when I read this post by a friend. I remember how we used to have Graf vs Seles camps set up at home during Grand Slam tournaments. Somehow over the years the interest in the game has kind of dwindled. Guess the interest levels will only get higher now... and am glad that this time round we'll be rooting for Indians given the promising talent we have.

Now that we've slowly made it to the ranking sheets... it's only fititng that we raise the bar. I'm looking forward to some day when we'll have an all out Indian vs Indian Grand Slam final. What say?

And now I read in a comment that some enlightened soul has complained about the cultural and moral Indian values of Sania Mirza because she hugged a male tennis player.

@IHM

Nice to see your comment on my space :) Thanks.

About the 'enlightened soul'... I think our so called moral police just need to go take a walk!

Sania Mirza has done our nation proud. I think it makes loads of sense for the rest of us to appreciate the young lady instead of creating issues out of non-issues.

And this enlightened soul seems to be quite an MCP... if it has to come to that why not question Bhupati's moral n cultural values coz he hugged a female tennis player!!!

Yes absolutely proud of her. I hope she gives them back nicely :)

Right said IHM. Fitting replies and strong stands against mindless people will only put them in place!

Hi Priya. All of us are proud, and it is a good start to Indian Tennis this year. Our cricketers have also done their bit by their great feat at Sri Lanka.

As for the MCP, just ignore and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

@Iyer Sir

Thanks for the comment.

You're right about how the year has begun well for both tennis and cricket. It'll be great if the promising newcomers in different sports like tennis, badminton, squash, shooting etc raise their performances in a way that they get as much footage as our cricketers.

Right said about the MCP too.
